Winterlights in Luxembourg City
Enjoy the magic of Christmas at Luxembourg’s Winterlights Festival from 22 November to 6 January.
Did you know that more than 20,000 lights adorn some 220 trees (including 36 Christmas trees) on the cobbled streets of Luxembourg’s 1,000 year old capital city during the festive season? The UNESCO World Heritage site with its medieval fortifications and amazing squares is filled with more than 400 decorations and 45km of wreaths, creating an enchanting atmosphere and sparkling skyline, the perfect backdrop for a memorable festive winter break.
Soak up the yuletide atmosphere at the many traditional chalet-style Christmas markets spread across several of the city’s squares. Delight in festive concerts, theatre, street animation or a family trip to the circus, and skate under the stars, ride the big wheel or taste local and international delicacies in this cosy, and never too-crowded capital.
Christmas markets and shopping
Children will love to ride the unicorns and lions on the carousel, whilst young and old alike can enjoy views of the city and some thrills aboard the 32m high Ferris wheel, located under the gaze of Luxembourg’s Golden Lady in Place de la Constitution. Fans of gourmet cuisine can sample Luxembourgish warming winter delicacies such as Gromperekichelcher (potato cakes), Kniddelen (dumplings served with cream and bacon) and the famous glüwäin (spiced hot wine) under a canopy of sparkling lights at the Place d’Armes.
There are markets in Place du Theatre, Puits-Rouge and Place de Paris near the central train station, serving local specialities or international cuisine, offering unique Christmas gifts and hosting daily concerts.
If you’re after an original gift or souvenir, Luxembourg City’s shops are open every Sunday during the Winterlights Festival. Pick up quality designer clothes and accessories, jewellery or the latest household item, or browse the flea and second-hand Christmas markets for something vintage. If you come in January, you can benefit from Luxembourg’s New Year sales.
Family fun – Advent circus and Saint Nicholas procession
Fire-eaters, trapeze artists, acrobats, and clowns will entertain you at the traditional Advent Circus from 30 November to 16 December. Saint Nicholas never misses a visit to Luxembourg to distribute sweets to the good on his parade with angels, snowmen, majorettes and donkeys, whilst Housecker is on hand to check if you’ve been naughty or nice.
Ice-skating under the stars
Nothing says Christmas like ice-skating under the stars and drinking a sparkling Crémant de Luxembourg under the twinkling winter lights whilst listening to your favourite festive songs. During Winterlights until 6 January, Place Guillaume II (locally known as Knuedler) is home to an 800m2 partially covered ice-rink surrounded by a festively-decked viewing area, open-air bars, live music and DJ sets. Instructors are on hand to provide help on the ice, whilst kids will love the ice wall and ice-sculpture workshops.
Winter expositions, craft workshops, concerts and theatre
Catch a Christmas show at the Grand Theatre, Theatre des Capucins or Rotondes. Each will be hosting performances of winter classics such as Peter and the Wolf and Rumpelstiltskin, in addition to modern day dance and clown shows. Families can take part in numerous creative Christmas crafts during the City art gallery Villa Vauban’s Villa Noël and Winter Wonderland at the Luxembourg City Museum. Catch a festive classical or choral concert at the Luxembourg Conservatoire or just soak up the atmosphere of live music, magicians, light jugglers, choirs and brass bands playing in the city squares.
